SESSION 2
Text: John 8:12
“Jesus spoke to them again: ‘I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life.’”
Big Idea: When you follow Jesus, your identity changes.
OPENING — “Labels Stick”
OPENING — “Labels Stick”
Let me ask you a question….
How many of you have ever been called something that stuck with you?
Not a nickname you liked.
Not something funny.
But something that stayed.
Maybe it was:
“The problem kid”
“The shy one”
“The screw-up”
“The athlete”
“The smart one”
“The disappointment”
Some labels were given to you.
Some were spoken over you.
Some were typed about you.
Some were whispered behind your back.
And some…
You didn’t hear from anyone else.
You told yourself.
What’s wild about labels is this:
Even when they’re wrong, they still shape how we walk.
You don’t just hear a label.
You start to live like it’s true.
That’s why what Jesus says here matters so much.
Jesus doesn’t walk up and say,
“Try harder.”
“Clean yourself up.”
“Fix your behavior.”
He says:
“I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Following Jesus isn’t about rules.
It’s about direction.
And direction determines identity.
TRANSITION TO POINT 1
TRANSITION TO POINT 1
Before Jesus tells us who we can become,
He exposes what darkness does to us first.
Because you can’t understand light
until you understand how darkness works.
Point 1- DARKNESS CONFUSES
Jesus says,
“Anyone who follows me will never walk in darkness.”
That doesn’t mean you’ll never stumble.
It doesn’t mean you’ll never struggle.
It doesn’t mean you’ll never sin again.
It means darkness no longer defines you.
Darkness lies—
not loudly,
not obviously.
Darkness whispers.
It tells you:
“This is all you’ll ever be.”
“People like you don’t change.”
“You already messed it up.”
“That’s just who you are.”
Darkness loves labels
because labels stop movement.
If the enemy can convince you,
“This is your identity,”
you’ll stop believing change is possible.
Darkness doesn’t just hide God from you—
it hides you from you.
You start confusing:
your mistakes with your identity
your struggles with your destination
your past with your future
But Jesus isn’t saying you’ll never enter dark moments—
He’s saying you’ll never belong to the darkness again.
ILLUSTRATION — GPS RE-ROUTE (Expanded)
ILLUSTRATION — GPS RE-ROUTE (Expanded)
Think about your GPS.
When you miss a turn,
it doesn’t start yelling at you.
It doesn’t say:
“Wow. Again?”
“I can’t believe you.”
“I told you so.”
It just calmly says:
“Recalculating.”
Translation:
“You’re not stuck.”
“There’s still a way forward.”
“We can get you where you’re going from right here.”
Jesus doesn’t shame your past.
He redirects your future.
Darkness says: “You missed it.”
Jesus says: “Follow me from here.”
TRANSITION TO POINT 2
TRANSITION TO POINT 2
So if darkness confuses who we are,
the next question is this:
What actually changes when we follow Jesus?
Because Jesus doesn’t just give information—
He offers transformation.
POINT 2 — FOLLOWING CHANGES IDENTITY
POINT 2 — FOLLOWING CHANGES IDENTITY
“Jesus spoke to them again: ‘I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life.’”
Notice what Jesus says—and what He doesn’t say.
He doesn’t say:
“Whoever agrees with me…”
“Whoever believes the right things…”
“Whoever goes to church…”
He says:
“Whoever follows me…”
Following means movement.
Movement means change.
You can’t follow Jesus and stay exactly the same.
ILLUSTRATION
That would be like saying,
“I got hit by a truck…
but nothing happened.”
If a truck hits you, it doesn’t ask your permission.
It doesn’t care how ready you are.
You don’t walk away like,
“Yeah, that was interesting.”
Something that powerful leaves a mark.
You might limp.
You might need healing.
But nobody questions whether it happened.
Following Jesus is like that.
When you come into contact with the living Son of God,
something changes.
Not overnight perfection—
but undeniable impact.
If nothing is changing,
it’s not because Jesus isn’t powerful—
it’s because you’re not actually following.
Now—hear me carefully:
That doesn’t mean you’ll never struggle.
That doesn’t mean temptation disappears.
That doesn’t mean your past vanishes overnight.
But it does mean:
Your struggle no longer defines you.
Your sin no longer owns you.
Your past no longer names you.
You may still fight—but you don’t belong to the dark anymore.
Light doesn’t erase the battle.
Light redefines who’s in control.
TRANSITION TO POINT 3
TRANSITION TO POINT 3
And here’s where some of you need this next truth.
Because the moment we talk about change,
some of you are already thinking:
“I’ve tried.”
“I can’t do this.”
“I always end up back where I started.”
That’s why Jesus doesn’t just change direction—
He changes who walks with you.
POINT 3 — YOU DON’T WALK ALONE
POINT 3 — YOU DON’T WALK ALONE
“Jesus spoke to them again: ‘I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life.’”
Jesus doesn’t say: alright i am glad you are in the family so
“You’ll be given a map.”
He says:
“You’ll have the light of life.”
which means Light isn’t just ahead of you.
Light is with you.
John 1:4–5
“In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.”
Jesus doesn’t just call people to believe—
He calls them to walk with Him.
He walks with you into places you’re scared of.
He stands with you in moments you want to quit.
He stays with you when you fall.
But notice this—
Jesus never walks with people to leave them where they are.
He walks with you toward the light.
That’s why community matters.
Darkness isolates.
Light accompanies.
Darkness says, “Handle this alone.”
Light says, “Come walk with me.”
And biblical community isn’t:
People who ignore your sin
People who excuse your habits
People who affirm everything you feel
Biblical community is people who love you enough
to walk with you—
and love you too much to leave you in the dark.
Jesus models a community that:
Walks together
Speaks truth
Moves toward the light
So if you’re trying to follow Jesus alone,
you’re missing part of how He designed transformation.
And for some of you,
the next step isn’t better discipline—
it’s deeper dependence.
Dependence on Jesus.
And dependence on the people He puts around you.
Real community doesn’t affirm your darkness—it helps you walk toward the light.
If that’s true—
then the question isn’t “Do I believe this?”
The question is:
Who am I walking with?
And what am I still trying to carry alone?
Because Jesus never asks you to step into the light by yourself.
He invites you to come—honestly, humbly, and together.
So before we sing,
let’s take a moment to respond—not by talking,
but by letting the light do what it does best.
RESPONSE MOMENT — SATURDAY MORNING
RESPONSE MOMENT — SATURDAY MORNING
Let’s take a moment…..
I want you to write down one label you’ve believed about yourself.
Something that’s shaped how you see yourself.
No one else has to see it.
When you’re done:
Tear it up or
Fold it and hold it in your hand
And quietly pray:
“Jesus, teach me who I really am.”
Because identity doesn’t start with what you reject—
it starts with who you follow.
CLOSING PRAYER — SATURDAY MORNING
CLOSING PRAYER — SATURDAY MORNING
Jesus,
You are the light of the world.
And You don’t just call us forward—you walk with us.
For those of us who feel stuck,
shine Your light with gentleness.
For those carrying labels we never asked for,
remind us who we truly are in You.
Teach us to stop pretending we’re fine
and to stop walking alone.
Give us the courage to depend on You
and the humility to depend on one another.
Form a community here that doesn’t ignore darkness,
but lovingly walks each other toward the light.
As we worship now,
quiet our minds, soften our hearts,
and meet us right where we are.
We follow You, Jesus.
Lead us into life.
Amen.
